In the year 198 of the solar era in Tokyo, a special fire department is battling a phenomenon known as spontaneous human combustion, in which humans turn into living hells, referred to as "infernal." Unlike the first generation of spontaneously combusting humans, subsequent generations have the ability to manipulate flames while maintaining their human form. Shinra Kusakabe, a young man who has the ability to intentionally ignite his feet and is referred to as the "Devil's Footprint," joins the 8th Special Fire Defense Force, which is composed of other individuals who use flames and are trying to extinguish every infernal they encounter. Shinra begins to peel away the truth about the mysterious fire that caused the death of his family 12 years ago.
